RIP Chris Kobel

I'm not sure of the first time I met Chris.

About a year or so ago, all of us sat down and watched the movies we made in high school. The one about the woods, and the skate video. There's a quick shot that Chris pointed himself out in; He's sitting next to Dustin and me, on the ramp, just kinda looking over at us. I think about that now and it might've been when we were taping that skate video. It might have been before that.

He was one of Paul's kids. That's what we used to call all the little skater kids that followed Paul and Mike around. Whenever I'd hang out with either of them, a whole bunch of them would just appear. That's how I met him. But I'm still not sure of when.

Chris made me laugh and I made Chris laugh. He was my partner in mischief. He always tried to cheer me up when I was down, and I tried to to do the same for him. He was a best friend. He was my biggest fan. He always listened to what I had to say, even when I was babbling. And goddamn, was he funny.

I want to tell him all these things. I hope he knew that's how I feelt. If not, I'll just have to tell him myself. I'm not religous by any conventional means, but that doesn't mean I'm not spiritual. I know his energy is out there somewhere. And it's probably up to something hilarious.

I love you and I miss you.
Eric

Whoever Wins (or Who Are These People and Why Do They Keep Shifting in Their Seats?)

Well, the election is over and Obama has won. This is a historic and awesome moment blah blah blah. You've heard all that so there's no need for me to rehash. Let me just say I feel like my batteries are recharged.

One thing I'm still trying to figure out is, the apathetic and proud, who kept poping up with their I-Don't-Even-Care opinions, all ellection. This is on top of a record turnout. Are these people the bottom of the barrel as far as not giving a fuck goes? Why are they showing pride in their indifference?

And how can they have such a bleak attitude? Maybe I'm too positive, but rather that than there is no Hope.

Local Ghostbusters

I was walking through town today when I discovered a flyer that was for something called Sights Unseen Paranormal. "Paranormal" being one of those words that always catches my eyes or ears, I stopped and read it. They have a website: www.nhghosts.com

I was amused by this and continued walking. I was stopped by some young girl who seemed to know my name. She wanted to know where Matt was, and if I had a ciggerette.

"He's at Alec's...er...Nick's. Alec and Nick's. I don't smoke."

Then she was calling me gay and giggling that she was only kidding.

"See 'ya later", I interrupted, running up the stairs to the bank.

BOOK US FOR SHOWS/PARTYS + New Music Info

Humble Among Kings is available for shows/partys. Just shoot me a message on here or get in touch via email:

humbleamongkings@gmail.com

We want to play!

+

Here's a breakdown of the projects I'm working on and the order they will (I hope) be finished:

1. "More Songs For You"

A sequel to the record that took way too much time to make. Actually this will be more of a transition. (what isn't?)

2. Merry Pranksters "Furthur"

This is a group with my friends, Chris and Alec. Us 3 on the mic and Andy+Chris on beats. Pychedelic rap.

3. "Joker"

Not really the title. Not sure what to call it yet. This will be a kind of tribute to a comic book villian who I relate with. The Dark Knight being a huge success and watching the way an audience is taken by The Joker only made me want to do this more. What a better time than now? Hahaha.

All for now,

Eric

H.A.K. Live @ the Mole's Eye 6-27-2008

I got a message on myspace about a rap show in Brattleboro. Always looking for a chance to perform, I contacted the group that was headlining/hosting the show (Dogbody) and they were cool with me opening.
Short notice but it didn't matter much. The Merry Pranksters and I had just done a set in the woods not even a week before. Well, maybe two weeks. Drunken rapping and losing microphones in the darkness. It's a good thing we had 3 mics set up, afterall. We got the speakers out of there just before the rain came.
But anyway, I went to the Mole's Eye and met with Dogbody. Nice guys. They set up the PA while I grabed a cheeseburger and read Countdown to Final Crisis in the back. They played some Aesop Rock and really mellow Reggae tunes while people slowly came into the bar.
I was told I would go on after Nick (didn't catch his last name). Nick did about 5 songs on guitar. A quiet, thin guy with thick, black-rimmed glasses. He opened with Yer Blues. I feelt silly for not even knowing that the Beatles did that song first, not Dirty Mac. This came out while I was chatting with Nick after his set. He asked me if I play chess. I told him that I did but I suck. I think he wanted to play.
After standing around while a couple songs played in between sets, the emcee announced Humble Among Kings and the beat started. I kicked it off with a new song called "Death's Dance Party". That one always seems to catch them off-guard. But I think they got the joke by the end. Party People.
I did a mix of old and new songs. "Glitz, Glamour, Girls" back-to-back after "You Couldn't Be...". And ended it by sitting down in a chair for "Subterranean Homesick Blues" (the Bob Dylan cover). On the last verse of the song, I stood up. I feelt like they wanted a little bit more, so I did "Still" without a beat. And then threw a selection of Yo MTV raps cards into the crowd after taking my bow.

"Songs For You" Free Download.

I spent the last 3 years of my life, writing and recording songs for what I was calling "my first real album". Now here I am, just giving it away. These songs represent a lot things I've gone through, and people I've met. Some of these songs I still do when I perform, some I'll never perform again. It's a concept album full of concept songs. Andy did the beats, I did the rap-singing.

Now That I'm Dead, The Fun Can Begin.

I write rhymes and rap them over beats. Used to do it under the name "Pugg". Too many others with the same name and too simple with not enough bang. So now I'm calling it "Humble Among Kings". Some of my friends have been asking what it means.
It's like a peasant who is wearing rags and eating nothing but stale bread, when he can find it, and not at all when he can't. He stands around doing nothing at all but talking of his bad situation. How the King is the reason he lives in such conditions. Just then, the King rides by in his coach and this same peasant is the first to kneel down and scream his praises. It's about those type of people.
And at the same time it's about how I look at those people.
